The IVP May 2024 Releases

May sees the release of three much-anticipated titles, for different readers, across both our IVP and Apollos imprints.

Vital Signs, by Ken Benjamin.

As Director of Church Relationships at LICC, and with more than twenty years’ experience as a church leader, Ken Benjamin is an ideal person to write on discipleship.  In this book, he proposes twenty ways, ‘vital signs,’ to gauge the health of discipleship, not just in the church but as it permeates the whole of life.  Far from seeing discipleship as just another activity to add to a never-ending to do list, Vital Signs reframes it as the lens through which everything else should be viewed.  Senior Commissioning Editor, Joshua Wells says,

"I have so enjoyed working with Ken on Vital Signs. It has been inspiring seeing two decades of church ministry distilled into 20 easily actionable points. The interaction between this book and the Vital Signs online tool from LICC will provide leaders with a comprehensive roadmap towards putting whole-life discipleship at the heart of their communities."

On our Apollos imprint, we publish thoughtful, academically oriented monographs and series titles - for a range of interested readers. We are particularly excited by our two releases this month.

Engaging with Thomas Aquinas, by Leonardo de Chirico

Engaging with Thomas Aquinas:  An Evangelical Approach is an introduction to, and evaluation of, the person and thought of one of the biggest, and most controversial, influences on Western theology.  Now, nearly 800 years since his birth, the Doctor of the Church is receiving renewed interest in evangelical circles, particularly for his skill as a biblical exegete.   It is from this viewpoint that de Chirico – himself a pastor in Rome and a blogger of Vatican Files:  Evangelical Theological Perspectives on Roman Catholicism - addresses his subject, tackling the question of how the evangelical can discerningly separate Thomas from Thomism.  Above all, this book seeks to explain how Aquinas, as one of the main contributors to the history of Christian thought and with all his strengths and apparent dangers, can and should be a reference point for evangelical theology.

Numbers 1-19, by L. Michael Morales

As part of the Apollos Old Testament Commentary series comes this first volume on Numbers 1-19:  a rarely preached-on part of the Bible which covers part of the ‘Wilderness era’.  This detailed and comprehensive study proves the book’s ongoing relevance, especially for the contemporary church.

L. Michael Morales is a professor of Biblical Studies and author of two books.  He begins with an introduction, in which issues of date, authorship and sources are discussed; pointers for its interpretation and application given and an annotated translation of the Hebrew text provided.  Form and Structure; Comments and Explanation sections further expand on historical and theological meaning.

Joshua Berman, an Orthodox rabbi and Bible professor at Bar-llan University in Israel calls it ‘breath-taking’ and ‘indispensable.’ J. Gary Millar, Principal at Queensland Theological College in Brisbane, Australia, says "Morales’ work on Numbers is a breathtaking achievement. It is a rare thing for a work of this scale (or any scale) to marry depth of scholarship, breadth of reading, clarity of expression and an evident commitment to the gospel of Christ, but this book has it all".
