About us

Inter-Varsity Press (IVP) publishes Christian books that are true to the Bible and that communicate the gospel, develop discipleship and strengthen the church for its mission throughout the world.

We publish evangelical Christian books for the church and the world, including for academic audiences under the imprint Apollos. As a British publisher, we aim to be at the centre of the UK evangelical church's conversation with itself and with the wider world. We also seek to have a global reach and impact through worldwide distribution, licensing and partnerships.

Our roots are in the university Christian Union movement. IVP started back in the 1930s as the publishing wing of UCCF. IVP is now a subsidiary charity of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK), an Anglican mission agency and publisher. Engaging students and the academy are still important to our mission, and we remain committed to publishing books true to the UCCF Basis of Faith. You can find some of our resources for students, produced in partnership with UCCF, here.

Our authors

We publish leading evangelical authors from the UK and overseas, including:

Our imprints

Our IVP imprint (you may see some older titles with 'IVF'!) is the home of the majority of our books, including some of our key series like the Bible Speaks Today (Old Testament, New Testament and Themes expositions) and the Tyndale Old and New Testament Commentaries. Covering everything from accessible Bible studies through deep devotional writing, to thoughtful cultural engagement and meaningful reference works, the IVP imprint seeks to publish books that are true to the Bible, and engaged with the world. We want to help all sorts of Christians think carefully from an evangelical perspective, and provide books for a watching world to see a careful and biblical Christian perspective.

You'll find Advent, Lent and 365 day devotional books, like:

  • Ros Clarke's Forty Women - a bible overview with a difference.
  • Mark Broadway's Journeying with God in the Wilderness - a study of the book of Numbers, that opens up complexity.
  • Catherine Campbell's Consider Him - a 365 invitation to gaze upon the goodness of Jesus
  • John Hayward's Rediscovering the Magic of Christmas - an advent adventure that takes the whole Bible story seriously.
We are proud to publish thoughtful books that engage critical questions, in a way that invites a range of readers to apply the Bible to the whole of life:
  • Sharon Hastings Wrestling With My Thoughts (a memoir of serious mental illness) and Tending To My Thoughts (a practical book about Mental Health recovery) are just one example of books we've published engaging carefully with these issues.
  • John Stott on Creation Care, edited by R. J. Berry and Laura Yoder - a fully recyclable book considering this vital question.
  • Ted Turnau's Oasis of Imagination - a robust yet friendly book about engaging culture, in all it's forms.
  • Ed Shaw's The Plausibility Problem and Purposeful Sexuality - two books engaging questions of sexuality and identity, robustly and carefully bringing biblical truth to bear.
Ultimately, though, we really want to get people into the Bible, to see what it has to say, so that they can make their own minds up about Jesus. And that means we publish a wide range of books, all pointing in the same direction:
  • Vaughan Roberts' God's Big Picture - a best-selling bible overview, with a free accompanying video course.
  • Amy Orr-Ewing's Why Trust the Bible - a best-selling apologetics book, in an updated edition, inviting doubters and sceptics and Christians alike to consider the Bible's truth.
  • Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology - a best-selling examination of what the Bible says about doctrine and Christian belief.
  • Marcus Nodder's I AM - an evangelistic book using the words of Jesus to invite people to explore life with Him.
  • Lucinda Van Der Hart and Anna France-Williams' Soul Food for Mums - an innovative devotional for mothers in baby's first year - helping women to engage with the Bible amidst the reality of life.
And to that end, we've published two Bibles, one a classic study Bible with notes drawn from our multi-million-selling Bible Speaks Today series, the other an innovative way to read the Bible for yourself over three years, with the Search the Scriptures Reading Plan integrated into the ESV:

"I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth" - 1 Cor. 3:6

Our Apollos imprint is home to our Academic publishing output, as well as titles and series for particularly thoughtful readers. This includes acclaimed series such as New Studies in Biblical Theology (the NSBT, edited by D. A. Carson) and the Apollos Old Testament Commentary (edited by David W. Baker and Beth M. Stovell.

Recent highlights from the NSBT Series include:

- T. Desmond Alexanders 2017 Exodus commentary - universally well-reviewed.
- Elaine M. Phillips 2022 commentary on Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah

The Apollos imprint takes its name from the account of Apollos in the book of Acts - a new convert whose prior learning paved the way for him to get out of the way, so that both learned and other followers of Jesus might understand the Gospel. Today, Apollos seeks to provide tools for workers and engage in the conversation between and about the church and academy. Headed up by Senior Commissioning Editor Thomas Creedy, we are open for submissions and keen to engage in the important conversations in and between church and academy.
