AI: Human friend or foe? Finding answers in Scripture

AI, human friend or foe?

Finding answers in scripture

Hardly a day goes by without AI being in the news, either some new “ground breaking” achievement that is benefiting society, robot interviews or gloomy dystopian forecasts of its existential threat. In January 2023, Chat GPT had taken the world by storm, achieving 100m users in just two months. AI applications are now mainstream working behind the scenes as well as in much talked about chat bots, the creation of digital art, essays and even video.

Questions about Christianity can now be answered by Chat GPT powered chat bots trained with specific Christian content. Some ministries are using it in evangelism, for writing sermons, translating video and creating voice overs, even creating prayers and for counselling.

What are the realities of AI, will it become cleverer than us, should Christians be cautious about using it, will it dumb down humanity, take over our jobs and become a master over us? Will these tools become a digital priesthood, our go-to means of outreach, rather than the relational disciple making envisioned by Jesus in the Great Commission? Will we choose the easy ‘BibleGPT’ option over wrestling with scripture as we seek to draw nearer to God?

There are few more pressing questions for Christians and humanity as this technology takes the world by storm and continues its relentless advance.
