‘Just right’. The key refrain in the Goldilocks story as she tries out the chairs, porridge and beds of the three bears, whose home she has entered…’Just right’ is also a good summary of a formidable (if not conclusive) apologetic argument for God’s existence.
For beloved theologian and teacher Michael Ovey, just as the earth is a ‘Goldilocks planet’ with conditions ‘just right’ to sustain life, so for theology we need a ‘Goldilocks zone’ which is ‘just right’ to encompass both ‘local’ and ‘global’ theologies. The particular and the universal collide at the cross, the place where seemingly disparate interpretations of Christianity can meet and cohere.
The Goldilocks Zone is a clear demonstration of why Ovey’s contribution to evangelical Christianity was so widely appreciated in the UK and around the world.
