For 1700 years, the Nicene Creed has stood as one of Christianity’s most enduring statements of faith. Recited in churches across the world and across denominations, it continues to shape what Christians believe about God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Yet for many of us, the Creed can feel familiar without being fully understood. Where did it come from? Why was it written? And what does it have to say to Christians today?

To mark the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed, we are launching The Nicene Sessions, a new podcast exploring the rich theology, history and relevance of this foundational Christian confession.

Through conversations with theologians, pastors, historians and Christian thinkers, we’ll unpack each section of the Creed, helping listeners discover not only what Christians have believed throughout history, but why those beliefs still matter today. Whether you’re new to theology or have spent years studying it, these episodes are designed to make the riches of the Christian faith accessible, engaging and rooted in Scripture.

Why We’re Launching This Podcast

At Inter-Varsity Press we’ve always been passionate about equipping Christians with resources that help them think deeply, live faithfully and engage confidently with their faith.

The 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed provides a unique opportunity to revisit one of the Church’s most significant theological statements. Rather than treating it as merely a historical document, The Nicene Sessions invites listeners to see the Creed as a living confession that continues to shape discipleship, worship and our understanding of God.

Our hope is that these conversations encourage Christians to engage more deeply with the foundations of their faith and discover afresh the beauty and truth of the gospel.

Episode One: “We Believe in One God”

Our first episode features David Firth, Old Testament scholar and author, as we begin at the very beginning of the Creed:

“We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.”

Together, we explore what it means to confess belief in one God, why creation matters to Christian theology and how the opening words of the Nicene Creed continue to shape the way we understand God, Scripture and the world around us.
