The IVP January 2024 Releases

With two very different new books, and four sensitively updated Old Testament BST volumes, 2024 is off to an exciting start for IVP.

At IVP we are deeply conscious of our legacy of publishing books and resources that are true to the Bible and have helped generations of Christians encounter Jesus afresh through his word, the Bible. This months new releases echo that - with books from trusted and much loved authors including Alec Motyer, Dale Ralph Davis and Desi Alexander, as well as a second book from Dr. Sharon Hastings.

Back in 2020, we published Sharon Hastings' debut book, 'Wrestling With My Thoughts: A Doctor with Severe Mental Illness Finds Strength'. Ostensibly a memoir, Sharon gave space to experts and ultimately the Bible's wisdom in a book that Philip Yancey said this about: "Sharon Hastings has done a true service by spelling out mental illness… This book is a good resource for those who likewise ‘wrestle’, as well as the helpers alongside." Four years later, IVP is delighted to be publishing 'Tending To My Thoughts: A Doctor with Severe Mental Illness Finds Recovery'. Editorial Director Thomas Creedy says of working on this book - "'Wrestling' was one of my favourite books of the pandemic year - and so it was an honour to work with Sharon on this hope-filled, humble and very human new book. I hope and pray it finds the readers who need it, whatever it is that they are in recovery from". You can order your copy in ebook or paperback now - ready to arrive/read in January.

We are also really excited to be publishing Desi Alexander's latest book with us - 'The Message of the Kingdom of God' in the ongoing Bible Speaks Today Themes series. Desi traces the theme of the Kingdom from Genesis to Revelation, in 22 chapters. Featuring a study guide and copius references, this is a helpful book for both preachers and small group leaders - and could be used as the basis of a personal devotional time. Here's what Nancy Guthrie, Bible teacher and author says about this new book:

"Kings and kingdoms can seem to be merely the fodder of fairy tales for some, while for myriad others, especially those who have lived under cruel kings in corrupt kingdoms, kings and kingdoms are seen primarily as perpetrators of oppression and violence. This is why we need the story the Bible presents to us, and which Desi Alexander has so capably expounded on for us in The Message of the Kingdom of God. This book connects all of the biblical dots for us, so that we can see not only how God is answering our prayers for his kingdom of justice and righteousness to come, but also the beauty of the king who has come and will come again."

You can order your copy in ebook or paperback now - or preorder it on Logos, if that's your preferred platform.

As well as these two new titles, we are delighted to be publishing the penultimate batch of Bible Speaks Today Old Testament reissues. We are close to the end of a major publishing project - begun in 2020 - to update and sensitively reissue these much-loved expositions for a new generation of readers. You can read more about the changes here. This batch includes:

The Message of Obadiah, Nahum and Zephaniah, by Gordon Bridger
The Message of Jonah, by Rosemary Nixon
The Message of Daniel, by Dale Ralph Davis
The Message of Amos, by Alec Motyer

IVP Senior Commissioning Editor Joshua Wells, who is overseeing the project to update the BST Old Testament volumes, said: "It has been a privilege to work on the update to the Bible Speaks Today Old Testament series - encountering these classic expositions, and hoping and praying for a new generation of readers."

As well as being widely available online, we'd love to encourage you to buy copies of our books at your local Christian bookshop.
